About This Course

NEBOSH has updated the NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) in Occupational Health & Safety – the most trusted health and safety qualification of its kind in the world. It’s designed to reflect the needs of today’s employer giving learners everything they need to know and do to make their workplace safer.

The new syllabus has been streamlined to allow core skills to be considered in greater depth. It covers methods to effectively manage health and safety, and how to identify, reduce and control the key hazards in every kind of workplace. Risk assessment is central to the IGC qualification, making sure it reflects the real-life roles people perform.

Moreover, the certificate will give learners invaluable knowledge and skills and a globally respected qualification that supports their current role and long-term career advancement.

Course Content

The contents of the course are covered in two units (NEW Syllabus):

UNIT IG 1: Management of Health & Safety

  • Why we should manage workplace health and safety
  • How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
  • Managing risk – understanding people and processes
  • Health and safety monitoring and measuring

Note: The IG1 unit is the core unit for other qualifications offered such as ICC and IFC.

UNIT IG 2: Risk Assessment (Practical assessment)

  • Physical and psychological health
  • Musculoskeletal health
  • Chemical and biological agents
  • General workplace issues
  • Work Equipment
  • Fire
  • Electrical

The NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) follows the same principles as the National General Certificate (UK) – achieving high standards of health and safety – regardless of any local legal requirements.

Assessments and Certification

Candidates are assessed by one Open Book Examination (OBE) that will test the learners’ ability to analyse, evaluate & apply learning, and a practical risk assessment (three-hour) that will evaluate what learners can do. Upon successful completion and passing, learners will be awarded the NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Safety & Health. Certification is issued by NEBOSH UK.

How will the candidate be assessed?

  • Unit IG1 – Management of health and safey – via Open Book Examination (OBE) on available NEBOSH global dates.
  • Unit IG2 – Risk assessment – practical assignment to be submitted in 12 days from OBE exam date.

What is an open book examination?

Open book examinations enable learners to sit for NEBOSH assessment on his own at a safe and suitable location. Learners would simply need to let us know the country of their location at the time of exams. Learners will be given 24 hours window to complete the paper. This will be followed up with a virtual closing interview in 1 week from exam date.

Completion deadline for this qualification is up to 5 years from the date one passed his/her first successful unit.

Professional Membership

  • Holders of the International General Certificate are entitled to Associate Membership (AIOSH) of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The qualification also meets the academic requirements for Technical Membership (Tech IOSH) of IOSH and Associate Membership (AIIRSM) of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM).
  • The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety has been accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). It sits in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 6 with 11 SCQF credit points.

SCQF Level 6 is comparable to RQF Level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Full Time training will be delivered over 10 days of classroom based learning over a period of two weeks with examinations on the nearest NEBOSH standard global date.
